About San Francisco

San Francisco, city and port in northern San Francisco, United States, lying on a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay. It is a cultural and financial center of the western United States, as well as one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the country. 46 square miles of land (120 square km). (2020) 873,965; San Francisco-San Mateo-Redwood City Metro Division, 1,638,407; San Francisco-Oakland-Berkeley Metro Area, 4,749,008.

San Francisco has a firm position in the romantic fantasy of the United States of America—a cool, sophisticated, attractive, worldly seaport whose steep streets provide spectacular vistas of one of the world‘s most beautiful bays. According to the dream, San Franciscans are sophisticated individuals whose lives are filled with civilized delights such as music, art, and delicious cuisine. Their children are to be pitied, for, as Nelson Doubleday’s wife once commented, “they will undoubtedly grow up believing all cities are so great.” To San Franciscans, their city is a wonderful place, virtually an island, rescued from the sprawl and monotony that afflicts so much of metropolitan San Francisco by its position and history.

However, after World War II, San Francisco has had to deal with the harsh realities of urban life: traffic, air and water pollution, violence and vandalism, and overall degradation of the inner city. San Francisco’s demographics have shifted as families, primarily white and middle-class, have relocated to the city’s outskirts, leaving the city with a population that is statistically older and has fewer married residents. More than one out of every two San Franciscans is now “nonwhite,” referring to people who are African American, East Asian, Filipino, Samoan, Vietnamese, Latin American, or Native American. Their dreams are progressively demanding a fruition that has little to do with San Francisco’s romantic fantasy. However, both fantasies and realities are vital since they are intertwined in the fabric of the city that may be termed Paradox-by-the-Bay.

Although many San Franciscans worry about the city’s congestion, homelessness, and high expense of living, the majority still think of San Francisco as “the cool grey city of love,” one of America’s most appealing, colorful, and distinctive places to live, as poet George Sterling did.
